At Light Counseling, our team is here to help you overcome life’s challenges with evidence-based practices and a distinctly Christian approach. We offer mental health services primarily to clients in the state of Virginia; however, some of our clinicians are licensed in other states and may provide online telehealth services for clients living in those states. Additionally, all of our services are covered by most private insurance companies and Medicaid. Beyond individual counseling, we also offer a full range of psychological services to support your mental health.

The first step to start the counseling journey with us is by submitting an Intake Form. This form allows our team to collect key information about you and your needs so our team may match you with the clinician who will best meet your needs and preferences. All services are provided by appointment only. After submitting your intake form, wondering what comes next? Here’s what to expect at your first appointment.

Why Choose Light Counseling?

Clinically Excellent

Our team is composed of highly trained, licensed, therapists holding advanced degrees. We utilize evidence-based psychological principles to ensure you receive the highest level of mental health care available.

Distinctly Christian

For most of our clients, faith is part of what’s holding them together and part of what hurts. So we don’t ask you to leave it at the door.

Quote Block

"Vices are the things that deform us away from who God has called us to be. The virtues are the things that build us into who God has called us to be."

Zac Clinton, counselor

That’s what the work is aimed at. Licensed clinicians, evidence-based methods, and scripture and prayer in the room because we believe they belong there. Faith-based counseling that takes your mental health as seriously as your walk with God.

You have a coach for everything else

Strength and conditioning. Nutrition. Tear a muscle and you're in the training room that afternoon, and nobody thinks twice about it.

Two things usually keep people from calling. One is thinking you have to be broken enough to earn it. As Zac puts it, "the big stigma is that you're just talking to a shrink. Oh, my kid, he doesn't need that quite yet."

The other is expecting someone who hands you the answer in one session and sends you on your way.

What actually happens is slower than that, and better:

"But when it comes to our mental health, it's the one thing that is completely underdeveloped that we just don't turn to."

Zac Clinton, counselor at our Forest/Lynchburg office

"My goal sometimes isn't to give you the answers, but to sit with you long enough until we find the right one."

Frequently Asked Questions

How is Christian Counseling different from traditional therapy?

You get the same clinical training and the same evidence-based methods you’d get anywhere. What’s different is that we don’t ask you to leave your faith at the door, and we don’t treat it as a symptom.

Scripture, prayer, and your relationship with God are part of the conversation because for most of our clients they’re part of the problem and part of the way through it. Zac Clinton, one of our counselors, puts the distinction like this:

“Vices are the things that deform us away from who God has called us to be. The virtues are the things that build us into who God has called us to be.”

That’s what the work is aimed at.

Is this right for me?

If your faith matters to you and you want it in the room rather than politely ignored, yes.

You don’t need to be in crisis, and you don’t need to have it figured out before you call. “There is always help. There’s always somebody that genuinely cares.” That’s true whether you’ve been in therapy for years or have never said any of this out loud.

Do you offer online Christian counseling, and does insurance cover it?

Yes to both. Light Counseling Plus is our secure video platform, and you can see the same clinician from home anywhere in Virginia. Some of our clinicians are licensed in additional states. Online sessions are covered by most private insurance and Medicaid, same as in person.

What Should I Expect from Christian Counseling?

Christian counseling pulls from a variety of counseling methods. One of the main differences between Christian counseling and some of the more secular counseling approaches is that Christian counselors use a wide range of materials, tools, resources, and psychological techniques, including prayer, scripture, affirmation, bible study, or self-evaluation to help you overcome your challenges.

In other words, Christian counseling focuses on your spiritual health, personal relationship with God, and the belief that, with therapy, personal problems, mental health issues, and emotional distress can be replaced with increased self-worth and spiritual fulfillment.

What Happens During a Christian Counseling Session?

During the initial sessions, your Christian counselor will try to get a feel for who you are through structured intakes and detailed conversations. Then, they will observe you, while you tell them about the burdens you carry.

Next, your counselor may ask you what you would like to accomplish by the time you complete the therapy process. After that, you and your counselor will discuss your goals and develop steps to help you achieve them. And, lastly, you will either verbally agree to commit yourself to the therapy process or sign a document that affirms your commitment to treatment.

How do I pay for counseling?

Our providers are paneled with all major insurance companies including Medicaid and Medicare.  We also have a sliding scale fee program for individuals or families that may have some economic hardships.  Our scale and application program is compliant with federal guidelines.  Our heart is that “no one is denied access to services due to inability to pay.  A sliding fee schedule is available based on family size and income.”
