Matthew Scott, LMFT

Hi, I’m Matthew. I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who believes that healing happens in the context of safe, genuine relationships. For more than 18 years, I’ve had the privilege of walking alongside individuals, couples, families, adolescents, and children through seasons of challenge, growth, and transformation. My path into this work has taken me through a variety of settings—clinical mental health programs, residential treatment facilities, home‑visiting services, outpatient hospitals, and Christian counseling centers. Each experience has shaped the way I show up with clients: grounded, compassionate, curious, and deeply respectful of the stories people carry. I spent two years co-leading a Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) program for adolescents and adults in New York State, helping clients learn practical skills for managing emotions, navigating stress, and building healthier relationships. I love DBT because it blends structure with humanity—it gives people tools while honoring their lived experience. My relational approach is also shaped by my roots. I grew up as a pastor’s son in Upstate New York, watching my father serve our community with radical genuineness, acceptance, and a nonjudgmental presence. Those early experiences taught me that people thrive when they feel seen, valued, and welcomed exactly as they are. That spirit continues to guide my work today. As an LMFT licensed in both Virginia and New York, I work systemically—meaning I look at the whole picture: your mind, your body, your relationships, your history, and the environments that have shaped you. I believe our stories matter, and that understanding where we come from helps us move toward where we want to go. In therapy, I draw from CBT, DBT, Mindfulness, Insight‑Oriented and Psychodynamic approaches, Attachment and Family Systems Theory in relation to kids and couples work. But more than anything, I aim to create a space where you feel safe, supported, and empowered to pursue a life that feels meaningful and aligned with your values. If you’re looking for a therapist who will meet you with warmth, honesty, and a steady presence, I’d be honored to walk with you.
