Are You in Love, or Addicted?

Love and addiction can feel like the same thing from the inside. Both are intoxicating. Both give you a high. So the intensity of the feeling won’t tell you which one you’re in. The direction it runs will.

Real love gives. Addiction takes. That is the whole distinction. Addiction is self-gratifying, and the question underneath it is always some version of, what can I get out of this that will make me feel a certain way? Love runs the opposite direction. It is about giving of yourself to someone else, and the strange truth is that the deepest receiving usually comes through that giving. Both love and a craving can light up the same reward, so watch what is driving it rather than how strong it feels.

Here is the blunt test. You can say you love a person, but if the love is really about what they give back to you, and it falls apart the moment they stop supplying it, that is closer to a craving than to love. Real love keeps giving even when it is not being repaid. Love addiction cannot, because it was never about the other person in the first place.

Some honest signs the pattern has tipped: you lose your sense of self inside the relationship, you tolerate treatment you would tell a friend to walk away from, the highs are euphoric and the lows are unbearable, and being alone produces something closer to withdrawal than to ordinary missing.

Why it usually is not about the person

Underneath most love addiction is an old belief that you are unlovable on your own, and the relationship becomes the proof you keep needing to disprove it. That is the same root that drives other compulsions, a wound looking for something to numb it. Often the seeds go back a long way, to a point where the love and steadiness a person needed was not there, and they learned early to turn toward something instead of someone. The relationship is where the pattern shows up. It is not where it started. Our explanation of the root of addiction traces that same dynamic.

None of this means your love is fake or that a relationship has to end. It means the drivers are worth understanding before they cost you more. Counseling helps separate genuine, giving love from a need being outsourced to another person. When the pattern is straining a marriage, our Christian marriage counseling gives both people a place to work on it together.

Common questions

How do you know if you are in love or addicted?

Look at which direction it runs. Love gives; the addictive pattern takes. If the relationship is mainly about what you get from the person, and it collapses the moment they stop supplying it, that is closer to a craving than to love.

What defines a love addict?

Someone who uses a relationship the way others use a substance, to get relief or a feeling rather than to give. The tell is that the connection is about what it provides them, and being without it produces something like withdrawal.

Can love actually be an addiction?

The pattern can work like one. Love and addiction both produce a high, so the feeling will not tell you which you are in. What is driving it will: giving of yourself, or getting something to manage your own pain.
