Kevin Cottrell

Kevin Cottrell

Kevin is a licensed resident in counseling who loves walking alongside clients in whatever they bring to the counseling room. He received his bachelor's degree in psychology from JMU where he conducted an Honor’s Thesis on social connection and loneliness and received a master's degree in rehabilitation and mental health counseling from VCU. Kevin specializes in working with boys and men on a wide variety of different struggles. He is especially passionate about struggles related to loneliness, grief, confidence, meaning/purpose, and addiction (such as pornography, sex, gambling, video game, alcohol, and substances). Clients would describe Kevin as warm and genuine, and also willing to be direct in a gentle and loving way. Kevin strives to create a compassionate space where clients feel comfortable enough to step outside of their comfort zone to share their struggles and take steps toward peace, freedom, and true joy. Kevin’s approach in counseling is directly informed by faith and biblical principles, collaborating with clients to find what God’s word has to say about struggles and areas of encouragement. He helps clients to take thoughts captive and utilizes homework to continue growth outside of sessions. Kevin became a therapist because he believes that the Gospel has the power to heal and change anyone’s heart, no matter how much pain or suffering they are experiencing. He strives to demonstrate to clients the same grace that God has shown him through Christ. Outside of counseling, Kevin enjoys any kinds of games from sports to board games (especially pickleball). Kevin also enjoys spending time with his wife, exercising, and reading the Bible.
