Dr. Gary Sibcy

Dr. Gary Sibcy, Ph.D., is the Director of Psychological Services at Light Counseling and a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with over 15 years of experience in psychological assessment and treatment. Education & Credentials: Dr. Sibcy earned his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from The Union Institute and University School of Clinical and Professional Psychology (1995), his M.A. in Counseling Psychology from Liberty University (1992), and his B.S. in Clinical Psychology from Liberty University (1990). He holds multiple Virginia licenses as a Clinical Psychologist, Professional Counselor, and Marriage and Family Therapist. Academic & Professional Positions: Currently serving as Professor of Counselor Education and Supervision at Liberty University, Dr. Sibcy is also the Director of the Ph.D. Program in Counseling and Research and Evaluation Center at the Center for Counselor Education and Family Studies. He maintains an active clinical practice as a Licensed Clinical Psychologist with Piedmont Psychiatric Center and has educated, trained, and supervised counselors for over 15 years. Clinical Specialties: Dr. Sibcy specializes in neuropsychological testing, comprehensive psychological evaluations, ADHD assessments, memory testing, and personality assessments. His clinical expertise includes the assessment and treatment of childhood disorders, anxiety and trauma disorders, personality disorders, and attachment-related issues in children and families. He has particular expertise in cognitive therapy for depression, anxiety, and trauma, as well as treating explosive children and their families. Research & Publications: An accomplished researcher and author, Dr. Sibcy has co-authored multiple influential books with Dr. Tim Clinton, including "Attachments: Why You Love, Feel, and Act the Way You Do" and "Why You Do the Things You Do: The Secret to Healthy Relationships," and "Loving Your Child Too Much." His research has been cited 147+ times in academic literature. He has conducted extensive research on attachment theory and consults for various group homes regarding attachment-disordered children. Current Research & Teaching: Dr. Sibcy's current research interests focus on developing and disseminating empirically supported treatments for both children and adults, with particular emphasis on the integration of religious beliefs in clinical practice. He writes, speaks, and consults nationally and internationally on topics related to attachment theory, interpersonal neurobiology, counseling, psychotherapy, and spiritual transformation. Professional Memberships: Dr. Sibcy is a member of the American Psychological Association and the American Association of Christian Counselors, maintaining active involvement in professional development and continuing education within the field of psychology.
